Immersed in a context of energy crisis, in which the price of electricity and other supplies keep increasing, at Praim we know that there are solutions and tricks which, if adopted, can lead to substantial savings, from many points of view, as regards the companies’ IT departments.
In this article we share some tips and best practices on the use of Praim solutions, which are effective for the centralized management of endpoints, guarantee complete security and promote energy consumption reduction, at a time when energy saving strategies are vital to the health of any business. These are tips designed to promote good management of IT infrastructures and that have not only beneficial implications on consumption, but also an eye towards the environment.
Consumption control from “the basis”
- Hardware
Praim offers a wide range of thin clients, designed to be used in the largest contexts, which reduce energy consumption and guarantee security and high performance. These devices consume up to 5 times less than a PC and last up to 5 times longer; they don’t require fans and moving parts, move less dust and heat less, thus requiring less use of air conditioning in the rooms. - Server-side software solutions
ThinMan is the centralized console with which it’s possible to have total control of the power management of all the endpoints and therefore to be able to define automatic, totally customized programmed switch-on/off policies, both on a daily basis (e.g. morning switch-on and evening switch-off), and on a weekly basis (shutdown during the weekend). - Client-side software solutions
Praim ThinOX and Agile solutions allow you to define additional energy saving policies: it’s possible to configure the automatic stand-by after a certain period of inactivity and more. The settings can be replicated and distributed on all thin clients thanks to ThinMan, defining the policies and assigning them to all the devices that must have the same behaviour.
Other tools made available by Praim
- For companies that have multiple offices distributed throughout the world, ThinMan Gateway allows to locally control the switching-on of devices and the distribution of updates. By reducing remote connections to the central server, with ThinMan it’s possible to save on the use of bandwidth and the network in general, but above all to significantly shorten server loads and overall times. A further saving is given by the speed in executing the updates and by the less time of use of the machines. It’s possible to perform fast downloads with a consequent lower risk of errors and repetitions, as well as to customize updates scheduling, to optimize consumption in each location, perhaps on the basis of hourly costs.
- ThinMan allows to distribute custom commands even in a planned way, with which it’s possible, for example, to order the shutdown of all monitors even on devices that must necessarily remain switched-on.
- Praim client-side software solutions, such as Agile and ThinOX, allow peripheral locking to prevent USB ports from being used inappropriately, e.g. to recharge smartphones: energy savings but also safety gains!
- Agile also allows to control the automatic start of applications on Windows devices…. Fewer unnecessary active applications, less CPU usage and power consumption!
Best practices to further refine energy savings
- Use a user login (e.g. the ThinMan Login function integrated in the Active Directory) to unlock sessions in automatic start-up and other device’s functions only when this is really in use. This will allow to consume less CPU, less network and make the server work less.
- Through ThinMan it’s possible to customize the devices’ organization to the complete liking of the IT Manager, also being able to define various classifications and differentiated policies according to the purposes. Using this feature allows to further refine the power management, define the different devices’ times of use and automatic shutdown or distinguish which ones must always remain switched-on (automatic start) and which ones must not.
- Also remember to check the brightness of your monitor!
Resources savings and lower consumption…
- Offering remote assistance via ThinMan on Agile and ThinOX allows to avoid unnecessary travel of IT department colleagues from one office to another.
- The use of Zero Config also allows to avoid resource displacements, in this case to connect and configure new devices, because they configure themselves as soon as they’re taken out of the box and connected to the network!
