What Praim Berry and Agile4Pi offer: the review of Maquinas Virtuales

Raúl Unzué Pulido, virtual systems and IT infrastructures administrator, passionate about technology and Linux in particular, has tested and reviewed Praim Berry.

Read the review:

A few days ago I tested a new product that Praim sent me. In reality it is not just one product, but two: Praim Berry, the thin client based on Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and the pre-installed Agile4Pi software.

Although I have already talked about a similar product, I want to clarify that Berry was a pleasant surprise to me. Other companies such as NComputing, Stratodesk or ViewSonic have based their strategy on changing the housing, customizing it for customers and using the same operating system. After a test, I realized that these devices could actually be an economic alternative to a thin client, but do not take full advantage of it, in fact at one point I noticed delays in the operating system. This can be exasperating for any average user, who expects the client to have no delays in use.

With Praim Berry, I noticed a big change. The operating system installed is Ubuntu MATE: very fast, light and really interesting for the IT administrator for all the information that can be found in the Linux community. At the moment it is compatible with Citrix Receiver.

The engine of this Thin Client is Raspberry Pi 3 B+ which costs more or less like a PC or a thin client. From the moment of starting up everything works without problems, and it does not seem that it is a device that consumes so little and occupies so little space.

Features
I sum up the hardware features for those unfamiliar with the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ project:

  • Broadcom BCM2837B0, Cortex-A53 64-bit SOC 1.4 Ghz Quad Core
  • IEEE 802.11.b / g / n / ac Wifi
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • 1 Gbps Ethernet
  • HDMI
  • 4 USB 2.0
  • Headphone jack
  • 16 GB disk for Micro SD

To give you an idea of the size, you can see Berry on my desk:

The ThinMan management console with Agile4Pi

The power of this product is also in its additions: in particular Agile4Pi in combination with the ThinMan console.

Already in the first screen they talk about a configuration in less than 1 minute: in fact, the steps are not more than 5. Among the most noteworthy features I emphasize:

  • The management of certificates
  • The personalization of the product
  • The possibility of creating a kiosk with a very fast process
  • The ability to provide remote assistance, updates, access,… from the console

When the operating system starts up, the Agile4Pi icon will appear, which you can customize:

If you do not have ThinMan or the device is remote, you can enable VNC as a client:

You can add resources, or connections, to the infrastructure to which Berry will be connected. At the moment, Citrix Receiver is the only option, but being an Ubuntu MATE it will not be difficult to install the corresponding clients:

Just configure it according to your needs, like Autologon, full screen,…

Moreover, it is possible to add certificates, wi-fi networks and other customizations.

How does Praim ThinMan work?
To work with ThinMan you need to download a trial and a Windows system on which to install it. I use it on a Windows 2019.

As you can see, the requirements are not many:

The ports used by the server:

And the installation ends in a few minutes. At the start we will have access to the web and we will need to enter the license number:

Web console:

ThinMan performs an automatic search of all Praim devices existing in the network, either through transmission or through IP address ranges, by detecting devices in both LAN and WAN. In a few seconds we can use the console:

You can set up configurations, such as updates, permissions, plan actions, offer remote assistance,… All documentation is available at the following link.
A great product to manage an environment with Thin Client at an affordable price.
