Repurposing PC: turn your obsolete PCs into the workstations of the future
How to equip yourself with a homogeneous and easy to manage infrastructure without investing in new hardware
The examples can be many. They include companies which have some old PCs, but still well working, and which is not right to eliminate, and companies which want to look at the world of VDI, desktop virtualization, but don’t have the necessary budget. Nowadays the solution is called “repurposing” and it means transforming the classic PC into a Thin Client. With all the advantages of having an endpoint infrastructure that is as uniform as possible, with an identical level of experience on each device and, above all, with centralized management of all workstations.
No new hardware investment
To benefit from these advantages, it is not necessary to invest in a completely new endpoint infrastructure, thanks to the new software solutions that transform the classic Windows PC or notebook into real Thin Clients. With two important implications: in addition to not having to buy new hardware, you can extend the life of devices that are already present in the company, and that maybe they are equipped with operating systems for which support has ceased (as may be the case PC with Windows XP).
The Praim ThinOX4PC solution is very light in terms of resources required, and allows to convert into Thin Client even obsolete PCs or notebooks, even of they belong to not very recent generations or are not particularly gifted with regard to the processor or RAM and mass memory. ThinOX4PC is a Linux-based operating system, it is extremely secure, as it does not allow to write to disk, making the PC or notebook transformed into Thin Client completely immune to viruses and also to any attempts at tampering from users.
This last feature makes converted PCs as an ideal solution for companies or facilities with endpoint to which many people have access during the workday. Even in these cases, in fact, the only person authorized to intervene on the endpoints is the system administrator, who can perform all the configuration and software installation operations, maintaining complete control of the workstations. All of this with the advantage to be able to do it from a single point, without having to necessarily move to the different locations of the company. The key feature of Thin Clients is, as is known, that they are managed from a single centralized console, with all the benefits that come with it. For these reasons, the tools for centralized management of workstations are now rightfully entered into the set of numerous companies: when it comes to have more than 30 workstations, or when a lot of them are distributed in distant places, a centralized management tool becomes a solution that can offer consistent benefits.
Transforming obsolete PCs or notebooks into Thin Clients also allows you to take another step forward in simplifying your infrastructure, as a PC transformed into Thin Client can help enable virtualization solutions, reducing hardware costs. It can also allow you to invest your budget in virtualization projects or in as-a-service application solutions, which, as is well known, can find in Thin or Zero Client devices a valuable tool for creating secure, homogeneous and easy to administer workstations. This is because, regardless of the underlying hardware, the repurposed devices have the same operating system and the same experience, the user interacts with a unified interface, and the IT department can easily leave the different management tools and forget the problems of managing different PCs or notebooks, thus welcoming a unified platform. With the certainty that it will always be stable, safe and light.
